Internship and Role Playing?

Your PADI Divemaster Training will involve some type of practical training experience. PADI provides two options to meet the practical training component of the Divemaster Course;

The Internship option involves interning in a number confined and open water diving environments with actual students in a variety of PADI Programs including, Open Water, Continuing Education programs, and Experience programs.

The clear advantage of the option is the fact that you gain experience with actual students. There are, however, other considerations when looking at the internship option. For example, if you are interning on an Open Water Course, the instructor who is conducting the course’s attention is inevitably going to be on the brand new Open Water Divers, and not on your performance. Before you begin this experience Ken will make sure you are up to his standards and skills.

The Role Playing option is when your instructor creates scenarios within your program where Divemaster Candidates play the role of student, Divemaster and sometimes even Instructor. Similar to the internship option, you will role play in confined and open water diving environments, in Continuing Education programs, and Experience programs.

The advantage of this option is that the instructor teaching the course will be involved in all aspects of the training from start to finish. By role playing scenarios, the Instructor can ensure you that you will gain experience in handling common problems and offer immediate feedback in your performance.

At Northwest Scuba we typically teach using the Role Playing option as it gives the instructor more control over the training. Although, there are occasions when we will opt to use the Internship option, we do so to offer more flexibility to candidates. When using the Internship option, our instructors make an extra effort to train divemaster candidates as they intern!
